Tiivistelmä
This paper highlights the special nature of the newborn infant's psychobiological adaptation to birth by looking at how the caring relationship and the neurophysiology of the infant become intertwined.
A normal pregnancy does not expose the infant to a significant lack of continuity. When the foetal homeostasis comes to an end, the continuous vital supply from circulation in the placenta ceases. The infant experiences hunger, feels cold and needs external provision for the first time. This triggers a need to build a bridge to the external care that replaces the placental union.
